Essential Question: How does poetry reveal what we might not otherwise recognize?
Having studied both the short story and the novel, students now consider why poetry is different from prose. In particular, students examine the power and expressive potential of imagery and other kinds of figurative language. They encounter poetry from a variety of cultures and are introduced to literary criticism by reading authors' reflections on their own poetry.
